Dr Benjamin received his University MBBCH degree at Witwatersrand University and subsequently became a Fellow of the College of Physicians of South Africa in 1975. He subsequently registered his specialty as a cardiologist in 1984. He is qualified to practise in the State of Louisiana having achieved his States Board of Medical Examiners in New Orleans in 1980. He spent time at the Brompton Chest Hospital in London studying echocardiography, and returned to South Africa to establish the first echocardiography laboratory at the Johannesburg Hospital. He was physician in charge of cardiac catheterisation at the Johannesburg Hospital where he practised cardiology for three years. Dr. Benjamin subsequently entered private practice and established a cardiac unit at the Morningside Clinic in 1985, where he was joined by four other cardiologists and two cardiac surgeons.
